March, 2010 Naitauba Farm Update - Page 1

Tropical Storm Tomas

Last month tropical storm Rene left Naitauba unscathed. We were basking in near perfect weather.

But then reports started coming in about another tropical storm forming.

Within a few days, Gilbert Evans and Joseph Taylor (our weather guys) were warning of what could be described as a mother of all storms.
Again we took down the shade cloth – we are getting good at taking it up and down quickly.

This time the winds were projected to be over 100 miles per hour, so we took extra precautions.

The cloth was rolled, tied up, tied to posts, and weighted down with logs.
100 mph winds can blow over anything smaller and lighter than a car.

So we took the bee hives off their stands, set them on the ground, and weighted them down with concrete blocks.

We also took down the mesh house and checked all the drainage swails.
A selection of seed trays were placed inside to make sure that we would have some seedlings to plant after the storm.

Everything that could be harvested was harvested so we would have a food supply to draw on after the storm had passed.

We covered windows with storm shutters. As the storm approached, we began to feel its destructive power.
